We have started feeding the birds and squirrels in the back yard and they are very fun to watch. We had a Robin over-winter and I wondered what she was eating. There is just nothing to eat here in the winter so I was worried about her starving. Of course I've now saved the one that was not smart enough to go where there is food, so now I'm responsible for her. HA! So, I did some research on the Internet (I love the Internet) and they will eat fruit but not seeds. So, I've been putting a little cut up fruit out every day. I feed them apples, pears, and grapes. It goes very quickly. Now we have 4 Robins and the squirrels love the fruit too. We also have about 10 sparrows that like to eat some of everything. We have been putting out sunflower seeds for the squirrels and dried corn. They only eat the bottom white part of the corn and leave the rest so that was not a good investment.
The most important thing to provide is fresh water. There is no water to be had in the winter except for eating snow. It doesn't even snow here that often, so I bet they are really thirsty. So, we put up the bird bath with fresh water and a bowl for the squirrels. It's amazing how often they come to drink the water.
George is in Milan right now and will leave this Saturday for Frankfurt. He'll be there for 2 more weeks (Total 3 weeks). We're in our second year of this now and it's getting pretty old. But, at least he has a job. Count your blessings... :-)
